Dozens of new shows tried to work their way into our hearts (and DVRs) this season, but only a few were actually worth watching. While we’re looking forward to the return of some shows, there are plenty we’re glad to be finished with—and another few we hope will be over soon.

So in honor of the mid-season finales, let’s take a look back at the best (and later this week I’ll tackle the worst) in this year’s fall TV lineup.

Grimm

Crime dramas were starting to get played out, but the creators of Grimm put a new spin on a tired idea, jumping on the fairytale bandwagon to create something that’s gritty, fun and a little bit magical. The characters are relatable and entertaining, and the overarching plot adds just enough mystery to the stand-alone episodes so that you’re intrigued but not distracted from the story at hand. Grimm reminds me of early Supernatural, but with more laughs and less darkness. (I know someone in the comments is going to hate that comparison… but just know, I’m ready to argue.)

New Girl

Zooey Deschanel is one of my favorite actresses—plus I’m a sucker for any show with someone from Veronica Mars—so I was committed to New Girl. And it’s a good thing, because this show was little more than sub-par at first. But it grows on you. And it has continued to improve, week after week, since the first episode. Jess is adorably quirky, Schmidt is just cocky enough, and did I mention they cast Justin Long as a guest star? Justin Long. There is no better pairing than the awkward-meets-awkwarder match between Zooey and Justin. And they’re not even the most entertaining couple on the show. With episodes like ‘Naked’ and the fantastic Thanksgiving special, New Girl is a comedy winner. (Plus it’s after Glee, so there’s really no reason not to just keep the TV rolling!)

Ringer

Last week, Selena asked if you’re still watching Ringer, a show that had so much promise but has been lacking a little in the ratings. Well I am still watching, and I love it. While Sarah Michelle Gellar hasn’t exactly been able to convince me that she’s playing two different characters (sorry, SMG fans), the rest of the cast is stellar and the show is intriguing. The pace can be slow at times, but it’s still one of the best shows out there—and I only see it getting better as time goes on and the mysteries continue to unravel.

Suburgatory

It may be because I’ve always thought I was a New York City girl at heart — forced to grow up in the dread of suburbia — but this sitcom is the most hilariously-accurate portrayal of the suburbs (as seen through a teenager’s eyes) that I’ve ever watched. Tessa is plenty sarcastic, but she’s not TV’s typical bitchy teen. Suburgatory has the perfect mix of city snark, suburban madness and sexual tension (between Tessa’s “hip” young dad and the lovably-over-the-top housewife down the street) to keep me coming back week after week for a light 20 minutes of laughs.

American Horror Story

A ’70s-inspired horror TV show helmed by the creator of Glee sounded bizarre and I had my doubts. And in all fairness, it didn’t live up to my horror-loving expectations, but how could it? No one wants to sit through a solid 60 minutes of gore and terror each week. American Horror Story is just bloody enough and just spooky enough to keep me loving it, without ever wishing for it to just end already (you know, the feeling you get about 50 minutes into any Scream sequel). It’s sexy, it’s scary, it’s complex, and I spend the hour after every episode re-watching what I just saw (thank you FX for the encore), trying to dissect every detail and wrap my head around the psychological mindflip that I enjoy oh-so-much.

Honorable Mentions:

Hart of Dixie, Once Upon a Time, Pan Am, Revenge, Up All Night, Homeland

Later this week, I’ll be posting my picks for WORST new fall TV shows! Do you have any suggestions? Did you agree or disagree with my BEST picks? Take a vote below or sound off in the comments!

I was sad to see Once Upon a Time & Revenge only get honorable mentions… They are two of the most entertaining new shows on television & keep getting better with each episode. Cannot wait to see more from both of them… I do agree that The New Girl is really well done!

  • http://twitter.com/mariaggonzalez Maria Gonzalez

I’m really enjoying “Whitney” as well.

  • Anonymous

Homeland deserves more than an honorable mention. That is without a bout the best show on television. I assume it doesn’t reach most people considering it is on Showtime. New girl is the next best thing, gotta love me some Zooey! I love the immature humor that New Girl has, I crack up every episode.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

You got it exactly: Homeland was only an honorable mention because I don’t have Showtime and haven’t been able to watch it… but I’ve only heard fantastic things about it, so I wanted it on the list!

      • Anonymous

I respect that, make sure you watch it though somehow. Whether on the Internet or when it hits DVD.

Revenge, The Secret Circle, Homeland and Ringer are all awesome.

  • hermy0209

Once upon a Time is sooooo much better than The Grimm…theres too many crime dramas already…once upon a time is original and has a great cast

also the secret circle, new girl and revenge all AMAZING!!!

  • Clive

Weird.  It wasn’t till I saw your poll that I realised I’m not watching any new shows any more.  I had started watching Grimm, Once Upon A Time and Ringer but just found myself not watching them after a few episodes.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

Have you tried AHS or Revenge? They seem to appeal to the same audiences as the three you mentioned above, but they’re still significantly different, so you may like them!

      • Clive

I was thinking about watching AHS, all I’ve currently seen of it is the video posted on here the other day of a man fighting a gimp.  Put me off slightly but I may check it out next week to fill the hole left behind by Boardwalk Empire and Glee.
Revenge seems interesting as well, its cast seems quite strong.  Don’t know how I hadn’t heard of it before today.
I might give Grimm another chance too as I did like the concept, think I stopped watching as a result of finding Once Upon A Time so unbearable.

Once! Once! Once! Other than that, I love your premiere column post, Sarcastic Sarah!

Now I wish I’d called my column like, Super Selina. 8-)

      Hahah thanks! :)

New Girl is definitely my favorite new show. it is hilarious! after that i’d have to go with Suburgatory.

  • http://twitter.com/purplehrdwonder Caitlin Kelly

See, the comparison with Supernatural is the exact reason I don’t like Grimm. I watched the pilot and couldn’t shake the impression that it was trying to be a less plot-driven Supernatural and not doing a very good job of it. If I want Supernatural…well, I’ll watch Supernatural. (And I really *wanted* to like this show.)

Once Upon a Time, on the other hand, is doing a great job of filling in for my other genre show needs beyond SPN and Fringe. It definitely deserves more than an honorable mention. I haven’t looked forward to new episodes of a show in awhile.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

I miss the early stand-alone Supernatural episodes with a new monster each episode, and that’s what I love about Grimm. I really think the two shows are completely different, but Grimm has the same (is it too cheesy to say this?) spark that first drew me to Supernatural.

As for Once… I’ve tried to like it, but it’s really not my thing. But I know it’s really well-done and a lot of people are loving the show, so I wanted to include it, even if it’s not one of my personal favorites.

  • daisyduck

Revenge has got me hooked. Really enjoying it. It’s much more consistent in it’s plot and interest level than Ringer, although I like that too.

  • akacj18

with the exception of Hart of Dixie I think your Honorable Mentions are actually the Best.  different strokes for different folks.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

A few of the honorable mentions are “I know this would be amazing, I just haven’t gotten the chance to watch it yet.” The others are just not my thing :)

American Horror Story is completely mental……I love it!

  • http://twitter.com/RachelgurlFL Rachel Gay

i love american horrow story everytime i watch it im like holy crap wait what and i like that keeps me guessing and 2 broke girls is my new fav sitcom

  • http://www.twitter.com/vthenerd Vladan Vukmanov

New Girl & Once Upon a Time for sure. Both shows are amazing.

    • A Very Potter Fan

I’m shocked and horrified that Once Upon A Time only got an honorable mention.

      • http://www.twitter.com/vthenerd Vladan Vukmanov

        IKR!

  • Alohomora

    Merlin. :)

    • Kahlan Amnell

Merlin isn’t a new show though. It’s in its fourth season…

      • rdh014

BAHAHA i agree with you but im still glad it got meantioned:D

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=17127641 Laura Jurgensmeyer

Pan Am and New Girl are definitely my faves. I don’t want ABC to take Pan Am away from meeee. =( It’s sooo good!!

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I like Pan Am too, but I wonder if the writers know what they want to do with the show. It needs better writing, but it’s a fabulous concept.

  • http://twitter.com/ActingDude17 Keaton Brower

New Girl and Suburgatory over Homeland? Really? Something’s wrong here.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

Like I said a bit earlier, the list is biased by what I have and haven’t seen. I unfortunately don’t have Showtime and haven’t been able to watch Homeland yet, BUT I’ve heard it’s fantastic and definitely want to watch at some point!

  • http://www.hypable.com Sonya Faria

Wow this is really hard for me to chose! Although I absolutely love New Girl, Terra Nova, and Grimm I have to say that American Horror Story is my favorite. ONLY because after each episode I’m absolutely obsessed and generally spend hours comparing theories with Sarah!

  • Anonymous

I really really really really REALLY LOVE REVENGE!

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I can’t possibly fathom why New Girl is so high up there, way above Suburgatory, but hey! My opinion isn’t the final say.

I do love American Horror Story, though. The first 3 episodes showed zero promise, but once those Halloween episodes hit, the show has just been fabulous. I’m glad they learned how to tone it down and make a compelling story!!

Also, I’m surprised Terra Nova is so high up. I sorta gave up on it into the 4th episode or so. It kinda took a boring route for me.

  • coolcatcheesecake

ONCE UPON A TIME! i can’t believe that you didn’t mention it! and REVENGE and PAN AM are wonderful as well :)

  • Cassiopeia

I’m so glad Once Upon a Time is winning with more than 50% of the votes. It’s definitely my new favourite show.

    • A Very Potter Fan

Ditto! I’m out every Sunday night, so thank heavens for Hulu!

  • rdh014

I hate Suburgatory. I get the satire. but honestly its not even good satire. And i grew up in the most suburb-ee-est of the suburbs (the middle class side of the ritzy suburbs outside of Houston). Seriously i don’t even find the satire funny. I love to make fun of where i grew up bc it is so odd compared to the city. I can take the jokes… but Suburgatory seriously isnt even remotely clever.

Sorry if you are reading this and love the show to bits, its just my honest opinion and i do not find anyone stupid for liking this show. To each his own.

  • PotterGamer

I’m really enjoying New Girl, Last Man Standing, and Suburgatory. Though with the latter it helps if you can really relate to Tessa, having moved within the last year to my own ‘suburgatory’ of a town, I certainly can and it’s a weirdly comforting sort of thing. I’ve also started to watch Whitney within the last couple episodes, which I’ve liked, but I haven’t really gotten into it yet.

  • leviosaaax3

MERLIN!!!! How can you forget that?!!

    • Cassiopeia

Because Merlin isn’t new? I’ve been watching it on TV for years now

  • Eoin

This is great but now I want to see what you think are the worst.

    • http://twitter.com/smaloy Sarah Maloy

I’m working on it! It’s been a busy week :)

  • Misswriter18

I haven’t watched Grimm. I have it recording the season… and I have Homeland recorded but haven’t went back through it.

New Girl and 2 Broke Girls are my new favorite comedies.  I don’t think I’ve decided which one I prefer yet, but they are both great.
