Today Universal Orlando announced that their classic (and really fun, in our opinion) Jaws ride will be closing to make room for a new ride.

Rumors suggest a Harry Potter expansion will be the replacement despite the fact that The Wizarding World is not located in the same park as Jaws.

Our friends at Inside The Magic report:

Universal Orlando announced this morning their classic Jaws attraction and its surrounding Amity area will close permanently on Jan. 2, 2011 “to make room for an exciting, NEW, experience” – and rumors point to more Harry Potter attractions moving in to the area.

Jaws has been a staple of the Universal Studios park for 20 years and Universal promises they won’t forget it, with a “couple things planned to ensure we always remember and honor it.” But for its replacement, they are staying silent at the moment, promising only a “new, innovative & amazing experience” to come.

But with a second version of Universal Orlando’s popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter all but announced for Universal Studios Hollywood in California, a long-rumored expansion of Orlando’s Wizarding World is now rumored to take over the space currently occupied by Jaws.

The existing Wizarding World is located in Universal Orlando’s other theme park, Islands of Adventure. Rumor suggests guests will board the Hogwarts Express train to reach a new Harry Potter-themed area, connecting the two parks.

A map on Inside the Magic illustrated how far Jaws is from the existing Wizarding World, so the train connecting the two parks would be necessary.

As we reported Wednesday night, Universal and Warner are close to signing a deal for a new Potter theme park at Universal Hollywood, but rumors have persisted that a Wizarding World expansion in Orlando is in the works.

That can’t be it! You have to pay separately to get into each park or buy a 2 park pass… Unless they’re fully combining both parks (which seems RIDICULOUS because they’d be losing money). I think it’s just going to be something “exciting and new” like they said… HP isn’t new.

  • Tom

Well if they’re in different parks then that would be a bit silly.

  • Macy

Will be interesting to see how the logistics of the entire set-up is managed. Jaws is stuff of legend. But then, I guess, you couldn’t have had a more apt replacement for Jaws than ‘Potter’. I mean, rather ‘Potter’ than anything else.

  • lookalivesteph

If they are putting a Harry Potter ride to replace Jaws, and have this connecting train to the two parks, it should be the Hogwarts Express.  You can probably buy 1 ticket that gives you access to all Harry Potter rides if they are going to combine the two though because no one is going to want to buy 2 separate passes.

    • lookalivesteph

Just re-read the article and realized it says it will be the Hogwarts Express. Opps! Well that would be pretty neat!

  • pygmypuff22

No I love Jaws! Why would they replace an awesome ride there are plenty of crappy ones :(

  • http://twitter.com/RachelgurlFL Rachel Gay

though im happy they’re expanding HP world im sad they chose to replace Jaws its a awsome ride and been there forever now kids won’t even know what Jaws is

    • Clive

I don’t think many people learn about Jaws from that ride.  There are films and a book.  And the Jaws in Hollywood.  Though I have always wanted to visit that ride so I’ll be sad I won’t be able to.

  • TheHamburglar

Look at all that space inbetween the locations of the two attractions…there is NO way. But in other news, the train rumor is confirmed: they are going to be connecting it from my house to the park in 2013

  • FloridaGirl

I highly doubt it. Like what was already said, there is a separate price for both parks, unless you buy the 2-park pass which is pretty expensive. It would be downright cruel for Universal to split Potter between both parks, forcing people to pay to get into both. I sincerely hope that this is not the case. They will likely expand within Islands of Adventure, keeping the entire Potter world together. If not, then they ought to be ashamed of themselves…It would be purely a money move. And they have already made a ton of money off of Potter.

    • Fravit

I agree. But unfortunately, they aren’t doing any of this for the fans. It’s always been about profits even from the start. A move like this wouldn’t surprise me.

      • Wildolddan

        Howdy Pards,
Of course, of course…don’t you see…Diagon Alley is not in Hogsmeade…it’s in London…Wonderful stuff is about to happen…The Leaky Cauldron…Gringotts Bank…Kings Cross Station…Platform 9 3/4s.  My gosh it’s a natural…Just imagine it…boarding the Hogwarts Express for a journey from Kings Cross Station to Hogsmeade!  It all makes perfect, wonderful, delightful sense!  Now, the magic will happen in both parks…the big attraction in Diagon Alley being new shops, a new magical place to eat, The Leaky Cauldron, Ollivanders…all the wonderful shops of Diagon Alley and, of course, a ride on the Gringotts Roller Coaster into the mysterious depths of the caverns below!  Goblins by the score!  Dragons!  Owls!  Ice Cream!  What a wonderful announcement…and Stuart Craig will make it about as authentic as it could possibly get.  Harry Potter fans will once again line up for miles and miles to welcome this exciting new addition… Wow!  I can’t wait!
Adios for now.  Talk to ya on down the trail.
        Wild Ol’ Dan

This worries me for what they will do in the Hollywood version. Perhaps they will take out some rides to make room for Potter? How else will they have space? If they take out Jurassic Park- The Ride I’ll be VERY upset. That ride is very dear to me, even though I know it isn’t the greatest. But it still seems to do very well every summer since it’s a water ride.

As for Jaws, at least there will be a Jaws experience still on the Studio Tour in Hollywood. Although, I never got to ride the Orlando version which is a bit different. :(

  • Fravit

Potter here seems unlikely. The only reason I could see this being consider is if Universal is trying to pull more revenue into it’s other park. But I dunno … something seems off about this.

  • http://twitter.com/taylie27 taylore thompson

This makes no logical since at all!

  • Clive

Maybe if it was HP they were planning on having a rollercoastery part in one park, and a more behind the scenes/ motion simulator type park.

Okay now that would be an awesome idea, a chance to ride the Hogwarts Express. It might not be what they are going to do, but it sounds awesome if thats what they are planning.

  • Eoin

I just went to Universal Studios. Jaws isn’t really a ride. Your on your tour and you see the shark eat the guy and the shark pops out near you. It’s more of a show and is not worth keeping over a hogwarts express.

  • Andromeda

I love Wizarding World more though…. ah I don’t know.

The only way this would work is if they did make is possible to ride the train to get to the other park because Jaws is on the complete other side of the Wizarding World and is in a completely different park. They would also have to have park hopper available because I think you can only spend one day at one park. But this is a good ride because I really didn’t like the Jaws ride. It was really hot when stuff was set on fire and just annoying. Not a big fan of it at all. Excited for Wizarding World expansion though =]

  • Matt P

I just got an email from Universal saying it is to replace Captain Jake Amity’s Tours. I am now very sad.

  • Emily

I honestly don’t care about Jaws and I don’t think that it will be an expansion of WWoHP, but I am really upset about them getting rid of the whole Amity section. Does this mean that they will be getting rid of Disaster? That is easily one of the best rides in Universal, not to mention that it is overlooked as a great audience-participation ride.

  • 1919a6

Oh, I hope not!  As much as I love Harry Potter, the Jaws ride is so iconic!  Hey, I’ve got an idea!  Merge the two!  Have the Great Lake infront of the castle still hold the dreaded Jaws!  Have it pop out of the water and try to eat the first years.  Who’s with me!?!?

    • Goldberry71

or perhaps they could dress up the shark to look like the giant squid from the lake? :)

  • LaurenFF

Right now we have Hogwarts and Hogsmeade in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. This is causing a huge draw to that part of the park, but I bet they are seeing a decline in people visiting the original Universal Studios park. It would be a genius business move (not to mention solving the issue of Wizarding geography) to create Diagon Alley in Universal Studios. That way people would HAVE to buy a more expensive 2 park pass to get the full Wizarding World experience.

  • Robbamorris

Still a chance for LOTR land considering that Transformers is probably the back up plan for Marvel Super Hero Island. Other longshot option is a Hop inspired as they own all the rights to that movie, or go younger with a dreamworks based area.

I think it sounds awesome! Anything Harry Potter is always new! I dont think you will hear most fans complain about they money! I buy passes to both parks anyhow!

How can it be going where the Jaws ride is when Jaws is on the opposite side of an entirely different park in the complex… Where is the confirmation that the Wizarding World extension is what’s replacing Jaws? Jaws is a movie that came out before lots of the amusement part crows were even born. They’re working on updating the park as a whole, eliminating stuff from movies that are too old to remember, and replacing them with the things that modern audiences will be able to connect to. Why can’t something else, from a newer movie, go to where Jaws is and leave the Harry Potter parts at Islands?

    • nbowwow

im a modern audience and FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • No More Potter

It’s completely unlikely. I would rather see something other than more Harry Potter and they aren’t going to do it. Not everyone is interested in the series and Universal has never used the same movie in both parks at once, EVER. I would say the chances are better for How To Train Your Dragon or some other Dreamworks effort since they already have Shrek, they are replacing Nickelodeon with Despicable Me and the dragons are popular.

  • Robots In Disguise

Then again, they are building a Transformers ride in Universal Hollywood. They might just be doing the same in Orlando.

    • Bcde

Transformers is pretty much the exact same ride as spiderman. So i doubt it.

  • Ncjason19

how could they replace such a classic ride with a pointless harry potter ride. i know they are doing this for the money which is very depressing, especially for me because i have never got a chance to ride it and now i never will. The jaws ride has been there for 20 years and all the sudden now they want to replace it.it’s ashame

Didn’t start commenting on hypable when this was posted so quickly going to give my thoughts on this. FUCK HARRY POTTER. JAWS IS A CLASSIC!! My relationship with Potter is love/hate and right now its hate! To be honest, if Potter never being published didn’t affect the creation of Hunger Games or twilight I would use a time machine to prevent its existence in order to save Jaws
