Today Lionsgate released the theatrical trailer for The Hunger Games, and WOW is it fantastic!

The trailer clocks in at 2 minutes, 30 seconds and only includes footage from the first half of the film (according to Lionsgate).

Seriously (and I say this as a fan of so many films and fandoms) this is one of the best trailers I have ever seen. The emotion and suspense is unreal. I actually got really nervous as it progressed from the Reaping to the Opening of the games. I haven’t even seen a good quality version of it, but the way it was put together was extremely well done. Good job editing team. I’m ready. Let the 74th annual Hunger Games begin.

    Really?? I was more impressed with Josh Hutcherson in the trailer than her. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was, but you could tell Jennifer was acting. It didn’t seem very natural. Josh was excellent though. Gale was perfect. And EFFIE is WOW!!!!

  and what helps the trailer is the timing of the music. E.g when the drum beat comes up, Katniss spins, showing off her dress at 1:28 right after Cinna says he’s here to help her make an impression.

This was well worth the hype (this time around).
1. Everyone is speaking in their normal accent (save Liam Hemsworth), which is not necessarily what I’d expected.
2. You can see glimpses of the oddity of the Capitol with the rawness of the woods.
3. And you get a fair idea of what the book/movie would be about without having had read the books, and without being exposed (yet) to the violence that is to come.

To be honest, I wish there was more. Instead of them showing full scenes for 30 seconds, I would have rather seen 10 scenes for 3 seconds. I wanted to see more of the Captiol, the Hob, and more of the actual Hunger Games.

Oh my god sooooooooooooooo goooooooooooooood!!!! I am totoally pleased. I mean, it’s a teeny bit more Hollywood than I’d like (some of the dialogue, and just the feel of the training), but that’s fine. Totally fine. I think they got as close as they possibly could. I’m thrilled.

Can I just say that I was hyperventilating throughout the whole process of finding the link, loading the video and then actually watching the trailer? I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it already! This is amazing and I just have so many positive comments but I can’t really think straight after that.
One thing though: the end of the trailer was freaking GOLD.

I watched this trailer and got the same feeling I got when I watched the first teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone over ten years ago. Since then, I have never had this feeling until now. What an amazing trailer. The look and feel of the movie exceeds all of my expectations. This is going to be a great movie and after a year when Harry Potter ends and during a year when Twilight ends, this will certainly herald the beginning of a new movie fandom.

It is way more than I expected, in that it was a GREAT trailer. I saw a banner last night at the movies and now we get a trailer, this is so exciting, I can’t wait to see the trailer on the big screen. They did a really great job of explaining what the movie was going to be about while still giving fans what they wanted too.

I’m at school so I jad to sneak and watch it in the library and I got in trouble because I was screaming too loud. This has everything!!! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I’ve read the books and I got the same feeling when I watched the trailer. I was holding my breath the entire time. I actually found myself sobbing watching this! Partially because of the heartbreaking emotion of it all, partly because everything on the screen was exactly how I pictured it, or even better! Love that they perfectly set up the suspense and told the non-reader audience the premise without beating you over the head with it. LOVED the Katniss and Peeta on the roof scene! March 23rd is my birthday and now I know more than ever it will be full of nothing but awesome!!!!

My friend and I both cried a little during the reaping scene( and i never cry!) and Stanley Tucci is so good at not looking like himself in films like this! I didn’t even realize that was Caesar until i stared at the still for a while. GREAT trailer! Really hope to see this in front of Breaking Dawn, or some movie very soon so i can see it on the big screen and freak out afterwards with my friends!!! :D

Loved it! I know that everyone has talked about Jennifer being a great actress but I had only seen her in X-Men. The the trailer didn’t really show much of her acting besides when she screamed Prim’s name, but that one scene was enough! I’m glad that this book-to-movie has real acting potential. I love Harry Potter but there’s no denying that the kids’ acting left something to be desired..I’m happy that it doesn’t looks like I’ll have to suffer through bad acting in these films

Wow. Really, really great trailer. Everything looks awesome – very visceral and breath taking. I’m definitely pumped. Also, thank goodness they focused on the relationship between Katniss and Prim rather than the love triangle that is sure to unfold. If they wanted to distance this film series from Twilight in any way that was definitely the first step.

I, for one, appreciated the choices made for this trailer, especially not showing any of the actual games past the very, very beginning. I like trailers that tease the movie, not give it all away, and I think this set it up very well without showing all the exciting parts. Jen’s a different Katniss than I imagined, but I can’t (and would never) fault her for that, because she looks like she puts out a pretty good performance and is probably closer to the spirit of Katniss than, say, KStew to Bella, or Dan Radcliffe to Harry (just my opinion, no disrespect meant). Other than her, I thought Prim and Effie stood out the most, and maybe Cinna. Also, I liked how they emphasized how lethal Cato was. Still waiting on Peeta, Gale, Rue, et al.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!.. this may be one of the first times that i haven’t complained too much about a trailer. They showed just enough that people who haven’t read the books would understand the plot.

I mean i’ve got to give it to Jennifer Lawrence she was brilliant and we only saw 2 mins and 30 secs of it. It was good to see Cinna, Rue, Prim and Cato (he looked scary) I don’t know i’m not really feeling Haymitch’s Backstreet Boys curtain hairstyle.. i don’t know! Josh Hutcherson really really impressed me, he sounds just the way the Peeta in my head does, so i think he’ll do a great job.

Liam was okay. Effy looks freakishly scary and gaunt!!! President Snow doesn’t quite have that striking look that i’d imagined when reading the book – i didn’t see any blue lipstick (i think it was?? i need to watch it again) Overall i’m very happy with the trailer. March is such a long way away!!! :(Ad oh in regard to Richard’s comment on the last episode of HG chat about the budget, i think it looks fine, i think they invested enough money on the film. It’s not really a CGI movie until the end so i guess that’s why the budget is not massive, but i assume that it will increase with each film. Marketing wise though we’re going to have to wait and see.

    I disagree. Prim probably gives the pin to Katniss. I think in the books it was Katniss’ friend that gave her the pin. They will probably eliminate that character in the movie because all she did was give the pin and die.

      I agree it looks like they have eliminated Madge from the movie. It just bothers me that Prim would have something so valuable while they struggle to survive. Doesn’t make much sense. Also, I wonder how Katniss will find out about the rebellion in the other districts if she doesn’t overhear it on the mayor’s TV.

    Except Prim never has the pin in the book. Madge gives it to Katniss. They say in the book the pin is worth a lot and “could keep a family in bread for months”. Don’t you think they would have sold it by now if Prim had it?

This just looks… incredible! I literally have nothing negative to say. I’m so pleased Jennifer was cast as Katniss; after watching Winter’s Bone I had high hopes and now after seeing this trailer I love her even more!
All the characters are really close to how I imagined, with the exception of President Snow. I expected him to look far more severe and cruel, but now that I think about it, the fact that he doesn’t look evil at first glance makes the character even more sinister.
I can’t even express how excited I am for this movie. March 2012 can’t come fast enough! :D

So. Impressive. I’m blown away. The Reaping scene actually made me tear up a bit, and all the actors are GREAT. However, just about everything in the Capitol is NOTHING like how I imagined it. Like the operating room where Katniss is getting ready? What? Also, the training gym seems too… high-tech. But it’s what they picked. And District 12 looks fantastic, though not what I was expecting.

I’m still a little wary because the books are so violent and the movie has to keep it PG13 which might affect the story, but this trailer is definitely getting my hopes up.
At the very least, it will be beautiful to watch even if it doesn’t stick to the story line!

My expectations were honestly really low, and this COMPLETELY shot way beyond my expectations. It was absolutely fantastic. Everything looks so close to how I pictured it in the books. I am completely sold on pretty much all of the actors and actresses. The music constantly had my heart pounding. I loved the build up to the games, and how it ended with so much intensity! My goodness I can’t even get over how well that was done. March 23rd could not come sooner.

I’m so happy with this trailer. Especially the fact that they put the importance where the importance was needed. The stress of the games, the panic in the reaping, the bleak district life. They didn’t make a big deal about the romance. You knew it was there, since there were these beautiful teenagers, but it was not overdone. YAY ! :)

Wow. So, I have to say I was really skeptical about all this, because the teaser trailer, or whatever it was, did not impress me at all. This, however, really did. :) My only complaint is that I do not at all like the look of Cinna, and to a lesser degree that of Caesar Flickerman. Otherwise, this trailer was pretty fabulous. It was exciting, and I got a good glimpse of most the characters- though it was strange that there was more of Gale than Peeta… but whatever. It was even really emotional- the shot of Gale sitting huddled up on the hillside as the Gamemakers count down really got to me. I can’t wait to see this in theatres!

Jennifer Lawrence’s acting looks top notch.Cinna was my favorite character in the trailer.The capitol looked really good and the futuristic style reminded me of star wars.Josh is Peeta.I like the tone of the film because it reminds me of Harry Potter GOF.As a fan It looks like they are going in more of a Harry Potter direction instead of Twilight.As far as the tone and the depth of the main character.

Please don’t shoot me down for knowing next to nothing about The Hunger Games but why does the Hunger Games take place? Is it just about culling teenagers? because I can think of more effective ways.
Anyway, I’m still not sure why this is such a massive deal but I’m intrigued enough to probably watch it.

  Basically, the Hunger Games happening as a form of punishment. The countries are made up of Districts, and the Districts attempted to rebel against the Capitol 75 years earlier. The Games are a “reminder” from the Capitol of what happens when people try to break away.

  Yeah probably. I think the first part of the film will consist of her actually getting to the Hunger Games and Rue’s death will probably end it. Then the second half will be her and Peeta trying to survive in the Hunger Games…then getting out, etc.

The trailer was AWESOME!!! I’m relieved now, because I wasn’t a fan of any of the casting and none of the set pictures got me excited. I just hope the actual film turns to be as good as the trailer.

The finger tribute was amazing. My favorite part is the countdown, because it shows the anxiety and most importantly the reaction that we didn’t get to see in the book.

I cried, yes, I cried. The anticipation is killing me, and my heart is still pounding hard after watching it several times in a row!!

I do have a couple disappointments though.. I expected District 12 to be darker, from the coal, and have less plant life. It looks a little too clean to be described as such a poor district. I was also hoping for more in-the-games action, but they will probably release another trailer with more of that.

The trailer looks amazing. I saw it when it premiered on tv. I loved it. I’m so ready to see the movie. March can’t come fast enough. Everybody looks really good. I’m going into this movie with the attitude that not everything will be like the book so I’ll keep an open mind mind about the changes. Thank you Harry Potter Movies. At the minute Haymitch is the one I’m worried about. Also keeping low expectations will help because sometimes I get very excited for something and the thing that I’m excited for doesn’t meet my expectations. I’m not worried about about this movie. This movie will be good.

This is seriously amazing! I can now say that I’m COMPLETELY satisfied with the casting. It’s very rare that we see a powerful woman protagonist, and Jennifer’s portrayal of Katniss is just superb. Now this is who little girls should start looking up to! *ahem* NOT that one character whose only predicament in life is whether or not she should become a vampire and marry her thousand-year-old boyfriend. *ahem* (Sorry…just had to say it.) Anyway, I Love, love, LOVE this! Haven’t been this excited over a book adaptation since Harry Potter (which seems to be the same case to a lot of the people here). Only disappointment from the trailer: NOT ENOUGH Peeta!!!

Holy crap. This is, without a doubt, the most amazing, most awesome trailer of all time. To think that this is only from the first half of the movie and the most exciting parts weren’t even shown. The initial bloodbath looks really amazing though it only lasted for a few seconds. My heart beats like crazy. I can’t even describe what I am feeling right now after almost an hour of watching the trailer. Chills, goosebumps, racing heartbeat. I experienced all of those watching the trailer. Josh and Jennifer are awesome. I can;’wait for March 23rd!

I’ve watched this trailer at least 50 times today. It looks amazing, the actors I wasn’t sure about (mainly Jennifer Lawrence) I am completely sold on now. The only one I’m not sure about is Gale, Liam Hemsworth doesn’t fit my vision of Gale. When Katniss volunteers, I tear up! The ending is so epic, too! I am seriously so excited for this movie!

This is almost perfect – thank god they didn’t try and sell it on the love triangle thing because that’s near non-existant in the first book anyway and everyone would just write it off as a Twilight copy.
Jennifer Lawrence was really good and not too hollywooded up. Josh Hutcherson looks okay so far – they couldn’t have picked anyone that looked as similar to the Peeta in my mind.
I reckon in the next trailer we will see more of training, Haymitch and the other tributes will be played up a bit more.

This is amazing!! It’s incredible how they brought the books back to life and this is just a trailer! I want to see more Peeta/Katniss interaction though in future previews and also Haymitch/Katniss ones. I think, just with this short thing, Lenny Kravitz convinced me.

What I like about it, is that they haven given every District their own design for the actual Hunger Games wear. In the last few seconds of the trailer this becomes evident, as you can see two persons with a gold design, another two with some kind of brown, and of course the black with orange detail that belongs to District 12. I have also seen a dark red colour and darker blue.

So as a huge fan of the books, I was not planning on watching this movie because I didn’t agree with some particular casting. Well the trailer was pretty good I actually ADORE Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. My one real problem is Josh Hutcherson. He is not believable for a second and not at all my Peeta. After watching this trailer I will definately NOT be watching this movie. I don’t know why all these film companies need to ruin good books with bad casting. Like really, they all pick already famous actors that don’t fit the roles. Look at how huge all the harry potter cast. They came from being nobodys to being some of the most famous kids in the world. Okay, rant over.

Okay, after watching the trailer for the umpteenth time… DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT PRIM’S WEARING THE MOCKINGJAY PIN WHEN THEY GO TO THE REAPING??? Later in the trailer, when Katniss closes her hand around it, you can see that she’s with Prim. I don’t think Madge is in the movie. I’m pretty sure Katniss gets the pin from Prim. I’m interested to see how that will effect things.

I hated that I can not watch just the trailer without having a crying fit. I’m afraid that it will happen. It would be my first year of reaping officially tomorrow.
