It looks like CBS are planning to cash in on the current Sherlock Holmes craze by launching their own modern-day remake of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.

Deadline reports:

CBS has bought Sherlock Holmes, a drama project from CBS TV Studios and studio-based Timberman/Beverly Prods., which is described as a modern take on the cases of the pipe-smoking private eye created by Arthur Conan Doyle. Rob Doherty is writing and will executive produce with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.

This would follow the success of popular UK TV show Sherlock, also set in the twenty-first century, which features Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character and Martin Freeman as his sidekick Dr John Watson. The planned CBS show would build on the popularity of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes feature films as well, which star Robert Downey Jr. and give an action hero twist to the nineteenth century detective.

Would you watch a show centered on Sherlock on American television?

Yes I would watch it, but I’ve been following Sherlock for a few years now and I don’t see how an American version could possibly measure up to the Moffat/Gatiss masterpiece that is BBC’s Sherlock.  America has already taken so many British shows (American Idol, X-Factor, Dancing with the Stars, the Office – to name a few) and tried to do them.  I don’t want to see Sherlock fall under the same cloud of lame that covers the rest of these.

If it’s just a copy of Sherlock, then I probably won’t watch. They need to find a way to make it unique and better!

I watched the 21st century version of Sherlock Holmes on Masterpiece Theater.  I thought it was good, but not as good as the old BBC productions with Jeremy Brett as Holmes.  You can sometimes catch the Brett shows here on public television.  I have no faith in Hollywood’s ability to do justice to good British TV shows and I won’t be watching the CBS series.

      YES! A Brett’s Fan!!
good to know there are still those left!

I’m up in the air with the CBS version- As long as they dont add “subtext” to it (if you want the robert downey Jr. You know what i mean *barfs*), give Holmes a love interest- of either side *again- glares at the Guy Ritchie version* and dont make Watson a bumbling fool but the badass ex- war veteran/doctor he is. I’m all signed!!

if they include any of those things- bye bye i’m not interested

    I’d love to see it!

The BBC Sherlock is my favorite series. And that’s ahead of House, Doctor Who (Same writers, director, and creator!), 24, and several 1990′s comedies.

I wouldn’t watch this US sherlock. it’s going to be butchered.

No way.  I LOVE Sherlock Holmes, but it doesn’t feel authentic when there’s already a decent movie out and a FANTASTIC show in the UK.  If they just wanted to play the Moffat-written show here, that would be fine.  But making another new one?  Enough already, and it feels like it’s for the money, not the fans.

I think I would start watching it, just on the principle that it might be good. But honestly, I’m not getting my hopes up. Usually non-American movies and tv shows that get ‘americanised’ for the public end up getting butchered and can’t compare to the original idea.

Ack! I hate this, booooo. I love Sherlock Holmes it’s true but really? CBS aren’t known for their production value in their shows (or even for that many good shows, tbh) so I don’t feel like this is gonna be good.

I’ve always thought of Sherlock as a very unique show. The amount of detail Messrs. Moffat and Gatiss have injected into their series is incredible, and I’m not sure if this new CBS series will ever quite match the level of dedication and detail. Of course, I could be totally wrong. However, although I am skeptical as of right now, I’d like to see their ideas and plots and ways of characterizing Holmes and Watson. I just hope Sherlock Holmes doesn’t turn into a television fad; I don’t think I could stand it if John could turn into a werewolf or if Sherlock sparkled in the sunlight.

I agree with most of the other comments.  An American Sherlock could not measure up to BBC’s brilliance.  I wish they could just pick up BBC’s show and show it instead.  I can see it being popular in the US because it reminds me of the Mentalist and Psych a little bit.  I really think an American version would be just too much Sherlock when we already have good things available.
