Sadly, Andy Whitfield, star of the hit Starz TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand passed away earlier today at age 39.
Whitfield bravely fought his battle with Lymphoma for 18 months, but unfortunately the cancer overcame him earlier today in Sydney, Australia. A beautiful statement by his wife, Vashti, has been released explaining the manner of his death:
On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have helped carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.
Andy Whitfield is best known for his role in season 1 of the Starz TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after the 1st season, delaying the production of the 2nd. For this reason, the prequel season, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena was made, giving the actor time for treatment and recovery. Whitfield responded very well to the treatment and was expected to return for the 2nd season. Unfortunately, the cancer returned, forcing the actor to drop out of the series completely.
This is extremely sad news, and with Andy Whitfield’s death, we have lost an exceptionally talented actor. Whitfield has graced the screen in every role he has played, and Spartacus will not even be half the show it was, without him. Our deepest condolences go out to Whitfield’s family.
