20 years ago today, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom. 20 years ago today, our lives changed forever.

We all know the story: An idea came to her on a train. She started jotting down notes. Her manuscript was turned down by many publishers, but Bloomsbury saw the potential and published it on June 26, 1997.
20 years ago today, everything began.
The book entered stores and we began reading. The love for the 7-part series slowly but surely began to spread.
Philosopher’s Stone arrived in America one year later. We met each other at bookstores, in classrooms, online, and spoke to one another about this Boy Wizard who struck a chord. Some of us were introverted (and maybe still are) before Harry, but his story was a way for us to open up. It gave us something to connect with fellow human beings over. It was an opportunity to feel comfortable.
We developed a love of reading. We fell in love with the characters. We fell in love with the Wizarding World.
As each book was released the fandom only grew. In fandom we found friends, love, heartbreak, inspiration, a drive to fight, good times, bad times. We found life.
Harry had troubles and so did we. As we grew up with the Chosen One, J.K. Rowling gave us the tools we needed to take on the world.
Though Harry’s story is over, we still carry J.K. Rowling’s messages in our hearts. We use them to take on the Dementors that plague us. We use her lessons to make new friends, go through with big life decisions, push through the hard times, and celebrate the good.
Ultimately, Harry taught us that love conquers all.
20 years ago today, everything began to change. Where would any of us be without Harry? It’s a scary thought. I know Hypable wouldn’t exist. I know I wouldn’t have found success in podcasting. I wouldn’t have had certain relationships, heartbreaks, friendships, good times, bad times. In fact, 90% of the people I call friends would never have been a part of my life. Many of my best friends I know thanks to Harry Potter.
What did Harry give you? Think about it. 20 years ago today, the bridge between those gifts and your life began to be built.
That Facebook added Harry Potter features to its app today speaks to the impact the series has had on the world. The books have touched, influenced, and connected everyone.
20 years ago it all began. Thanks, J.K. Rowling.
