The mid-season finale of Teen Wolf aired yesterday, and although it answered a lot of our questions, it definitely raised many more!
The mid-season finale of Teen Wolf, named “Lunar Ellipse,” was an intense 42-minute ride from the moment Scott, Stiles, and Allison came out of the tubs of ice water, right up to that final confrontation between Jennifer and Peter.
Worst yet, we have a five month hiatus ahead of us now. But we’ve also got plenty to ponder, and we’ve got a list of the top 10 questions we have following season 3, episode 12.
1. What kind of effect will ‘the darkness’ have on Allison, Scott, and Stiles?
Allison, Scott, and Stiles became surrogate sacrifices for their parents in order to save them from the Darach. Because of this, they’ll now have a permanent “darkness” around their hearts. This sounds very spooky and worrisome, but what does that actually mean?
We know that Scott is still a True Alpha, so it didn’t change the goodness that’s inside him, but that’s not to say it won’t have an effect in the long run. On top of that, Allison has struggled with her darkness in the past, and Stiles’ nerves have been fraying pretty rapidly this season.
We have to wonder if the darkness is something that other creatures, other villains will be able to pick up on. Now that the trio has gone to such a dark and haunted place, does this mean they’ll be more tempted to lose sight of their goodness in the future?
2. What will make Derek return to Beacon Hills?
Because, let’s face it. Derek’s not going to be gone forever. He’s been an integral part of Teen Wolf since season 1, and we’ve finally seen him come out on top and walk away from the hell that Beacon Hills has been for him for over six years.
We’re happy Derek decided to leave, and happy that Cora was able to accompany him. They definitely need to do some brother-sister bonding. It’s also a good way to write Adelaide Kane out of the show without having to kill off the character. Derek doesn’t need anymore tragedy in his life.
So, what’s going to make him come back? Perhaps Scott will call on him for help? Maybe Peter will trick him into coming back? Maybe Chris Argent, of all people, will reach out to him and tell him that he can’t just walk away from Beacon Hills now that he knows the Nemeton will be calling all sorts of creatures to the town.
3. Is Deucalion ‘cured’ or is he still up to no good?
In the mid-season finale episode, Jennifer healed Deucalion’s blindness so he was able to see what she looked like. Jennifer paid a heavy price for Deucalion’s obsession with having a perfect pack full of talented werewolves. And she definitely wanted him to be able to look on her true face, the face of the Darach.
Deucalion’s vulnerability in that moment was interesting to watch, but it was obvious that he was not the changed man we were all hoping he’d be. When Scott refused to kill Jennifer, Deucalion gladly stepped in and finished the job for him.
Derek and Scott decided to let Deucalion go, threatening that if he didn’t play by the rules, they would come and find him. But do we actually think Deucalion has changed his ways? Is giving him his eyesight back and killing off the thorn in his side that was Jennifer really enough to make him turn back to his peace-loving ways?
4. What did Peter mean when he said he was already the Alpha?
That last scene with Jennifer caught us off guard and made so much sense at the same time. Just as she was crawling to the Nemeton, hoping to be healed once more, we see Peter stop her and slash her throat, killing her once and for all.
During this same scene, he declared, “I am the Alpha. I’ve always been the Alpha.” But…what exactly does that mean!? We know Peter’s been hanging in the background for quite awhile, biding his time until the opportunity arose. We get that he wants to take Scott’s Alpha powers, but how could he have always been the Alpha?
We’re taking this quote metaphorically rather than literal and saying that Peter has wanted to be an Alpha for a long time. Perhaps since he was younger (think back to that scene where he caused — whether intentionally or not — Derek’s eyes to turn blue), he’s had it in his mind to be the Alpha. Why he didn’t challenge Derek, we don’t know, but Scott better watch out!
5. Now that Sheriff Stilinski believes the supernatural exists, how much will it effect his job?
In the penultimate episode of Teen Wolf season 3A, Melissa McCall explained the world of the supernatural to Sheriff Stilinski as they were tied up in that root cellar. We found out that he had been suspicious for a long time, but had just never believed.
But the sheriff can’t deny it anymore. After the events of the past few days in the Teen Wolf universe, he’d actually be crazy to keep denying it.
So, what does this mean for him as sheriff of Beacon Hills? We’re sure he’s not going to be looking at the goings-on in his town quite the same way. We see him working with Stiles more closely from now on, and perhaps bending the rules a bit more to accommodate the weird and unusual. But could this get him in more trouble than it’s worth?
